How can affected towns and villages protect their communities when they’re brought in after the fact?
That’s exactly what the current resolution on local permitting for the Columbia Wind Project. The County Board votes on it September 16th.
It gives affected towns and villages no authority until AFTER the project already has the license and Alliant applies for building permits. By then, many of the decisions that determine how this project affects your community have already been made.
Alliant should be required to follow local permitting processes of the affected towns and villages before the PSC rules. Pausing permitting makes that possible. It gives these communities time to understand the full scope of what's coming and apply their own ordinances while those ordinances are still enforceable. This is the window to have real impact.
